Film Writers Wanted

In the past No Ripcord has been a music site, with a side order of film coverage. This is about to change, as we are aiming to develop our film section throughout the coming months. In order to realise our ambitions, however, we will need to recruit at least two new film writers. This is where you can help us.

Film After The Soviets (Part 2)

Post-Soviet Russian society is a hotch-potch of cultural ideas, arguments and discourses - none so troublesome as that of 'Russian-ness', the idea of things belonging inherently to Russia. Whatever aspect of Russian national identity directors are addressing, the majority would say that they are searching for the 'truth'. This concept of truth within Russian cinema itself reverts back to theories developed in the 1920s, most prominently in the works of Dziga Vertov.

Film After The Soviets (Part 1)

1991 is seen as an important year in world history, albeit mainly in political, ideological and economic terms. The medium of cinema, however, is interesting to analyse with regards to post-Soviet culture as it closely mirrors cultural trends and tastes witnessed within a society. The post-Soviet cinema industry, like any, plays a vital historical role in how we perceive society. Cinema shows modern interpretations of events that may have happened a long time previously and also events that may not have been discussed at all.

Post-Oscar Hangover

Ya know, it’s campaign season here in the US of A, and a lot of disgruntled observers, myself included, are getting swept up in the phenomenon of Obamamania (Obamania?). Finally, in our lifetimes, we are seeing a politician talk about Hope with the rhetorical finesse to make it stick. Maybe he can change our politics, maybe he can bring us together, maybe there is Hope. Well, for anyone who stayed up to watch the Oscars last night, and has done so countless times before, the message is clear: Don’t count on it.
