Club 8: Seasonal Echoes
Over the course of a thirty year career, Johan Angergård and Karolina Komstedt’s Club 8 project has enchanted listeners with its perfectly formed indie pop.
Thirty years into a storied career, it would be easy to take the venerable Swedish indie pop duo Club 8 for granted. Their soft, subtle brand of songcraft doesn’t scream for attention; it wafts around in the background and gently tugs at your heartstrings. This is a curse in the streaming age, when the next thing a mere swipe and a click away, but I sense Johan Angergård and Karolina Komstedt couldn’t care less.
Angergård and Komstedt have been self-releasing Club 8 singles every month since 2024, and Seasonal Echoes is the product of the latest ten. 2024’s efforts were compiled on A Year With Club 8. While such a relentless schedule might have a negative impact on quality control for some artists, it’s clearly having a positive effect on the Swedish veterans.
The propulsive “Lazy” recalls one of Angergård’s many other bands, The Legends, whose 2003 debut Up Against The Legends is an all-time favourite of mine. Other highlights are the melancholy “Your Modern Heart” and the shoegaze dirge “Let It All Fly”.
It’s hard to find fault with a record as competently put together as Seasonal Echoes, but a little more variation in terms of tempo and mood would strengthen its appeal.
