Turnstile NEVER ENOUGH

(Roadrunner Records) Rating - 6/10

Turnstile is not the first, and surely not last, hardcore punk band to capitalize on their increasing popularity by expanding their musical reach. And while such pivots are admirable, the Baltimore five-piece does no more than raise their highly emotive sound even further -- and with that comes an outpouring of cloying sentimentality. Your mileage may vary, of course, but declarations such as “Never let your guard down/Anywhere you go” aren't necessarily novel. While they add a few new tricks to their arsenal, whether adding an extra layer of polish to their tried-and-true hardcore (SUNSHOWER, SOLE) or a touch of bright, jangly new wave (I CARE, SEEIN' STARS), their crossover attempts feel frustratingly half-hearted for a band that genuinely subscribes to the healing power of music. In spite of that, NEVER ENOUGH does inspire when they ever-so-slightly fine-tune their old tendencies (LIGHT DESIGN), providing the kind of lovable jab that will elevate their cherished live performances.
